What's the most important issue in America right now? The fact that our economy is in its worst state since the Great Depression? The fact that we've been in a war in Iraq for the last 6 years that has no end in sight? According to Governor Sarah Palin of Russia's neighbor Alaska, the only issue that matters is energy.
Seemingly every question in Thursday nights debate somehow managed to hit the topic of energy and oil once it was deflected in Palin's direction. While Senator Joe Biden of our beautiful Blue Hen state answered questions on Iraq, Pakistan, the economy, and yes, even energy, with poise and confidence, Palin simply recited back what her handlers had been telling her for the past two weeks. Yet somehow, this is seen as her doing well simply because she didn't completely bury John McCain's fledgling prospects at the Presidency.
Look, the pundits can come out all they want and say that Palin did well simply because she held her own against the experienced Biden. However, this country is in too dire of a situation to have someone so close to the Presidency, especially considering McCain's age and former health problems, with so little experience. Forget the "little" details of her flubbing the name of General David McKiernan and calling him General McClellan or her statement that "John McCain is the man we need to leave." While these details certainly paint a picture, it is just her overriding lack of experience and complete unreadiness to take over the Presidency that is quite frankly, terrifying.
Luckily, the polls have shown that Biden won the debate and that Obama continues to widen his lead in the major battleground states that will decide who wins the White House one month from today. Hopefully, Americans continue to come to their senses and keep the McCain/Palin/Bush ticket away from the major decisions that will decide the future of the greatest country on the planet, because, quite frankly, if McCain wins, America may not be the greatest country on the planet in four years.
